First Communion Shopping starts in January. Most Communion Sacraments are held in early spring, although there is no set schedule and churches do follow their ceremonies on their schedules, so summer and fall does bring in some communion shoppers. This year the Sweet Kids communion dress collection has rolled out a bit early. Being such a high quality popular brand we anticipate the highest volume to come from the company. As usual, Sweet Kids does not disappoint.

The fall winter season usually draws a change in color tones for flower girl dresses. Sweet Kids this year draws on natural beige mixed with stark black. This new style incorporates warm looking stretch velvet with a bit of glitz and ruffle on a drop waist dress.

Style 303, seen below, is a brighter taffeta dress with a change in texture but maintains the holiday sequin embroidery for the festive shimmer. Natural tones will be bright and warm this season. Expect no lack in shine weather it be embroidery or the actual fabric.

SK251 – This is a beautiful sweet kids design with another drop waist and ruffle trim. Black is a solid shade this season. Ruffles mixed with lace are a common mixture.

Style 252 , seen above, is nearly identical with a higher waist and a wider skirt for a younger look.

Style 272 is all about ruffles! A chic style that still keeps the sparkle.

STYLE 301 has come out in white, ivory, and black. It has a more subtle ruffle across the bodice while still keeping a traditional cut.

Princess Dresses are the ultimate play time fantasy for every little girl. From tea parties to sweet sixteen gowns little girls have wanted to play princess dress up from the time they saw Glinda the good witch or images of Cinderella. There are few times for a little girl to still dress up princess style weather a wedding flower girl or a pageant the princess dress has changed little through the last 100 years of Hollywood glamour. A princess dress is usually a full ball gown with a fitted bodice. In the real world they fade in and out of the fashion lime light in respect to whats hot for wedding dresses, quincenera, or prom gowns, or pageant styles. This was a booming prom style in the 80 with a full skirt and poof cap sleeve, the 90s brought a more sleek sillouhette and the princess style took a back seat for a decade. Recently in the past few years this ball gown style has been seen more and more with a bit of a chic changed look. No more are the Cinderella styled poof sleeves, but a sleeveless sweetheart neckline for older girls, and a Victorian double drop shoulder for a younger age group. Today the princess style dress is popular and we absolutely love the new choices.

Lets start with the little ones. For smaller children the princess look is all about fantasy and play. Disney styles have always brought the bright happy cartoon colors to the land of dress up. This years looks are a cross between the Disney cartoon and the glamour of the pageant world. Of course, the most popular of these styles will be the Cinderella dress in bright crayola colors.

Complete with Cinderellas head band, cuff sleeves, and satin choker, this style has been insanely popular for the toddler to 8 year old style . This style is of course not the exact dress Cinderella wore in her debut. Popular for pageants and birthday parties. Little girls don’t necessarily want to be Cinderella. They want to be their own princess that happens to be like Cinderella, or Belle….yes the bright yellow dress is for the Beauty and the Beast lovers…

Great dress, but what does it look like in real life…if you’re like me the picture looks like candy, but going too Disney might end up looking like its time to trick or treat, right?

Actually, a reader sent us a dress bought from our mother store at FlowerGirlPrincess.com just to let us know the dress was prettier in person than the original stock photo,

of course this little girl already looked like she belonged on top of a Christmas tree, but you can’t deny this looked like the type of birthday party that the second grade will talk about all year.

A-line Style Flower Girl Dresses When referring to dresses and coats, the term A-line generally means fitted from the shoulders to the hips and then widening to the hem, usually in childrens formal wear used to mean widening from the shoulders to the hem, ignoring the waist and hips.It is often used to describe a popular style of bridal wear, which is fitted above and around the hips but flares gently to the hem, giving a streamlined and quite slim lookThis is an excellent choice in juniors fashion. Sizes that range from flower girls to junior bridesmaids can vary greatly in body type and height. The A-line is a clean flatteringsilhouette for all body types and can create a uniform appearance for a variety of girls from petite to plus size.

The CC1087 – Champagne Satin Flower Girl Dressis a perfect example of the A-line style as it was originally coined by Christian Dior in 1955. Here the dress is fitted from shoulder to hem and beautiful clean box pleats create a flare to the skirt from the waist to the hem creating the A shape. The young flower girls in attendance at the royal wedding in the spring of 2011 wore a simmiliar box pleat A-line design

Another great traditional A-line design. Here the shoulder to hem is still fitted and the skirt flares out. The dress is sans pleats, but has a liberal amount for fabric from the waist to the hem to give the full look. The double spaghetti strap style is more suitable for an older child. However, the fitted top of an A-line dress makes it an easy style to add a bolero or short mid drift shrug for a more conservative look that a younger child my need.

Another classic look is the A-line Dress with the scoop neck. These two style techniques are simple clean lines that allow for a natural look that makes one look well put together. A great example of this combination is the Jillian (MB120) dress . This satin Aline dress is a timeless popular dress. Although the simple structure to the garment with a straight satin apron overlay and removable sash give it an elegant look , its the combination of the clean scoop neck line and straight bodice with A-line skirt that will make those akward to fit ages look as if this dress was cut to fit each individual child.

Let’s talk about full length flower girl gowns. Although, I can’t speak for weddings all over the world, in American culture flower girls tend to look like little angelic attendants in tea length dresses, sometimes the miniature bride is the desired look. The miniature bride usually is in one of the flower girl gowns full length to the ground and wearing a garment that matches closely to the bride. In a case like this, there may be only one flower girl attendant and it is a glamorous role for a little girl.

When I work with a little one in a photo session I’m not only looking at the lighting and fabric of the dress. I’m looking at the future of the image in my imagination. One over all goal is to say, lets make sure the little girl all dressed and dazzled still looks like a little girl. The miniature lux bride is not a pageant contestant and although there is a place for make up and jewelry it is a careful ballance. Blush and lipstick can be not only unnatural to the eye on a little face, but it can also invoke feelings that can make an adult woman feel alarmed and defensive.

One example of this would be an article recently published in Time magazine about a 10 year old french Vogue model who has created a little buzz about her all too grown up look.

Here one sees a perfect face, perfect make up in neutral tones, perfect hair, casual fashion wear on a little girl stretched out on a tiger skin. This is hardly scandalous, but has invoked a lot of feeling from french women, because she looks too grown up.

One can only imagine what a pr disaster if her lipstick was unnaturally bright red or blue glitter eyeshadow highlighted her brow.

Now we take this little tid bit lesson and apply it to the real world. How much is too much when we dress a little girl to be a mini me. When going with the miniature bride look for your flower girls, make sure her dress is age appropriate. Strapless dresses may be fine in your oppinion, but consider should her dress slip and she have an embarrasing accident while standing in front of many eyes it may be over just too whelming for a little girl. Even a spaghetti strap dress may need a little jacket covering.

Make up is perfectly appropriate, but too much color may look more like a television performer and not a little girl. Shoes are another this to take into consideration. If she has never walked in a shoe more than an inch high. Stumbling, tripping, and a nervous little girl again becomes a performer.

One great way to create the mini bride look, is to create a full long dress with a large petticoat for a full formal look. Sparkle and glamorous looks best on a child when it is on the dress. Beads, sequins, and embroidery can beautiful accessories. Embellishments can be done with an up do and a small tiara in the hair or a flowy veil. Too much jewelry is not necessary, pearls work perfectly. Make sure your jewelry is LEAD FREE! Find American made accessories if possible, especially anything that goes into your child ears! Shoes need not be high, ballet flats are perfect. And of course, a matching bouquet is the most important accessory

This past month in the New England lands a Conway/Tynan wedding was celebrated. It was a flawless sunshine day, held outside in Manchester’s Wickham Park. The bride looked picture perfect, the sun seemed happy, too happy, looking down at us, the spectators. In fact, the sun brushed away the clouds, and stared at us with its magnifying bi-focals burning us like little ants in the desert. And, you know, the photographer was an hour late.

Snap shots while we wait for the photographer

Princess Jalea made an impressive flower girl. Being small, and allowed to roam during the wait, we got a sneak peak at the small wedding party and their classic black and white attire. Dressed in Poly- Dupioni dresses the fabric was a breathable lightweight design. Perfect for the 104 degree weather this Saturday produced.

Although, the dress is full and fluffy. The day is hot and no under layers were needed to create this full look. The attached under crinoline is easily fluffed and starched. This little trick will keep the light airy fabric further away from her skin for a more comfortable feel on a scorcher of a day. The bride was clever in customising a black 2 piece satin sash with the dress to match her wedding dress.

The bride has chosen a taffeta wedding dress. Its the prettiest thing you’ve ever seen and now you get to go through selections of styles to add your input for the flower girl dresses! We have a few caveats before you choose when matching your flower girls to the bride.

Taffeta is a glamorous fabric it catches the light in a romantic visual, sometimes in two tones. The most common taffeta in formal wear is called ‘party taffeta’ this is the soft shiny silky version. It can be lightweight, crisp, stiff and sometimes described as feeling like paper. Don’t be fooled by the texture, sometimes the more expensive bulks feel more like paper. It can be made of silk, but in respect to children’s wear you want the poly-blend, or just synthetic material. This is not a cheaper version, but it is the washable version, which is the only choice when the occupant is 9.

The most important thing to remember when choosing your flower girl dresses, second to a complimantary color, is the fabric. Not all fabrics match. White is an arbitrary word. A white silk dress is not the same color as a white satin dress. Usually, natural fibers hold dye a little less than synthetic fibers. If your brides dress is a natural silk taffeta you don’t want to choose a wedding quality matte satin dress for your flower girls. When your bride looks at her wedding photos she might be bummed if her beautiful dress , although white, looks dingy against her attendants.

Point being, if your brides dress is taffeta. You MUST put your flower girls and bridesmaids in taffeta, or silk. Matching fabric can be just as important as matching dye lots!

Other bright contrasting colors can be acesorized with a taffeta dress. One popular combination is a bright organza sash over a taffeta dress

MB119 White Taffeta Pick Up Dress from Flowergirlprincess.com

Here you can clearly see just how white these dresses can pop in the photos. These are a poly blend taffeta, and they are NOT as white as Wedding Satin. Now, if your bride is wearing a wedding quality satin dress her figure will pop just a bit brighter, and this may be a desired quality in her wedding photos.

MB119 White Taffeta Flower Girl Dress from Flowergirlprincess.com

Another neat quality about this fabric is the light fluffy quality. These pick up gathers will stay light and fluffy through the entire time its worn. A heavy satin will start to pull toward the ground after a while, but taffeta will look like fresh whipped cream and still keep its ‘high end’ look.

MB119 White Taffeta Flower Girld Dress from Flowergirlprincess.com

All in all, taffeta, comes highly recommended from both formal wear and children’s wear. One of the biggest benefits is the easy cleaning score. We give it an 8 out of 10. Care instructions always say hand wash, or professionally clean only. Those instructions are put there assuming your washing machine has teeth and you’ve never actually washed clothes in a machine. Taffeta can be carefully washed in a GOOD washing machine by itself and hung to air dry. You will find the white fabric looks as bright as new sans cake icing stains. Do be thoughtful to remove any colored sashes, new bright fabrics will bleed no matter what they are.
